| Sedibeng exceeds expectations at International Tourism Indaba 2011 |
23 May 2011 |
The annual Tourism Indaba was held from 7-10 May 2011 at the Albert Luthuli Convention Centre (Durban ICC) in Durban. The largest platform for the promotion of tourism and tourism products in Southern Africa, it is also the most important marketing opportunity for the Sedibeng District Municipality and the region.
“Vaal, the place to be”, the destination marketing slogan of Sedibeng, ensured the prominence of the Vaal 21 and Sedibeng brand, whilst being integrated with the Gauteng Tourism Authority’s pavilion at the Indaba. Along with all the regions in Gauteng, the pavilion aimed at achieving a stronger, combined presence.
The success of Sedibeng’s participation at the Indaba was in a large part thanks to the efforts of Local Municipalities and the Sedibeng Interim Regional Tourism Association (IRTA), who worked closely with the Sedibeng District Municipality to achieve the region’s key objective: the promotion of Sedibeng as a collective and as a tourism destination of choice.
Representatives from Emfuleni Local Municipality and the IRTA also formed part of the Indaba delegation.
With the welcome assistance and sponsorship from the Vaal River Wine Route and other significant stakeholders, the Executive Mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality, Cllr. Sithole Assistance Mshudulu, launched the Vaal River Wine Route at a wine tasting event held on the stand on Sunday, 8 May 2011.
The event was well attended, and included the presence of the Chairperson of the Gauteng Tourism Authority Board, Mr Khehla Mthembu, and the CEO of Gauteng Tourism Authority, Ms Dawn Robertson.
The Executive Mayor said, “An abundance of attractions make the Sedibeng District any tourist’s dream-come-true. One of these attractions is the Vaal River Wine Route. The project came into being following the partnership between the wine estates and product owners in the Vaal. The main aim of the Wine Route when it started was to give our region the same prominence that is enjoyed by areas in the Western Cape and the Northern Cape. And I think we have succeeded but we are still working hard to take this to another level.”
