On the 17th June 2011 the Sedibeng Municipality in partnership with the Aaron Mokoena Foundation and P Management commemorated the 19th Anniversary of the Boipatong Massacre which took place in 1992 and left 46 Boipatong residents dead.
The commemoration which was held at the Boipatong Stadium, began the with a morning sermon at Vuka Cemetery in Sharpeville where wreaths were layed on the deceased’s tombstones. The official opening of the Molete family house followed soon afterwards.
Mitta Molete was only 3 years old when an armed force of IFP members who were raiding the township broke into her family’s house and attacked them, Mittah now 22 yrs old survived that terrible ordeal but was unfortunately left wheelchair bound.
Last year the Sedibeng District Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng promised the Molete family a house worth R300 000, the house was officially opened on the 17th June.
“It is time that we stop calling ourselves victims, we should from now on call ourselves survivors, the events that took place in the apartheid era were not the end our lives, but the beginning of our lives, therefore we are not victims,” said the Sedibeng Executive Mayor Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng.
One hundred and twenty five (125) blankets were distributed to identified elderly people as well as school uniforms presented to identified needy children from the Makapane Primary School which is former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena’s former school. As part of ensuring that a lasting legacy is left for the youth of Sedibeng, the Sedibeng District Municipality as the Aaron Mokoena Foundation hosted a Mini Tournament on the 18th June 2011.
Six (6) teams and Makapane Primary participated in the under 15 soccer tournament which was held at the Boipatong Stadium. The winning two teams were provided with soccer kits and the rest of the teams were given medals for their participation in the commemorative tournament. In addition to these prizes, 120 participating players were offered training in computer literacy and life skills by Youth Life Organisation from Boipatong and two coaches were indentified to undergo training in the United Kingdom.
