12 Dec 2011 |
The 10th December 2011 marked the 15th Anniversary of the signing of the South African Constitution into law - by the then President of South Africa, Mr. Nelson Mandela, in Sharpeville.
The Sedibeng District Municipality successfully observed and celebrated this day through a mayoral community outreach programme linking it with the Christmas mood. The programme saw over a thousand children, men & women receiving Christmas presents and clothes hampers contributed by our partners, Lorsons Vereeniging.
Beneficiaries of the mayoral outreach programme were from informal settlements such as Khayelitsha, and areas such as Tshepong and Sharpeville and who were identified by ward councillors in the wards the programme visited.
The programme in celebration of the 15 year of our internationally acclaimed Constitution saw the District Municipality interacting and hosting a workshop for the people living with disabilities, dialogue with the woman / elderly, 6th South African Literary Awards, dialogue with the youth and the service delivery expo, bringing services close to our people
“Long before the intense moments of the last few months of the so-called service delivery unrests, through the signing of this glorious Constitution, it was decided that open and accountable government will be reinforced by co-operative governance among all spheres. Sedibeng District Municipality stands as a true champion of this ideal. Through the five years of unqualified audit opinions from the Auditor General, we have used all the funds entrusted to us in the proper manner, for the purposes for which this money was intended”, said the Executive Mayor, Cllr. MS Mofokeng
The celebrations coincided with the official opening of the newly refurbished and reconstructed Sharpeville Hall – which has retained its historical features resembling the Sharpeville Hall of the 1960s. The official opening of the hall was done during the event which was graced and attended by the Premier of Gauteng Province: Ms Nomvula Mokonyane and the Public Protector South Africa: Adv Thuli Madonsela, who both addressed the audience of over 400 participants who among other included formations from civic, business, religious, political parties.
The opening of the hall is significant in the sense that it is in line with our continued commitment to Renewing Our Communities, Releasing Human Potential and building a better for life all.
