Sedibeng District municipality honoured the three remaining Rivonia Trialists, Andrew Mokete Mlangeni, Ahmed Mohamed Kathrada and Dennis Theodore Goldberg with its highest civic award, The Freedom of Sedibeng. The awards event took place on Friday, 15 January 2016 at Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng. This occasion was part of the process for the Annual Mayoral Awards of Sedibeng District municipality, where the municipality acknowledges individuals for their achievements or contributions to the region, country or the world. Councillor (Cllr.) Busisiwe Modisakeng, Executive Mayor of Sedibeng District municipality and Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng, Executive Mayor of Emfuleni Local municipality, co-hosted the event. Due to ill health, Andrew Mlangeni was unable to attend and was represented by his daughter.

Ahead of the official ceremony, the anti-apartheid veterans laid a wreaths at the Sharpeville Memorial Centre to pay tribute to the victims of 1960 Sharpeville massacre. The only other recipient of this highest honour by the Municipality, was the late President Nelson Mandela in 1999, when the Municipality was then called the Lekoa-Vaal Metro. The three recipients are also due to receive the Freedom of the City of London this month.
