Council Business Gets Underway for 2008

[30.01.08] The Sedibeng District Municipality, with the local municipalities of Emfuleni, Lesedi and Midvaal, officially opened Council for 2008 on Wednesday, 30 January 2008. The opening was followed by Council’s first sitting.  The event was well attended by MMC’s and officials at the Vereeniging City Hall.

In his opening statement, Executive Mayor Mlungisi Hlongwane acknowledged the achievements reached by the Sedibeng District Municipality in 2007.

He said, “2007 was indeed a successful year for local government institutions in general, and Sedibeng District in particular. The low or zero staff turnover is yet another indication that we have reached the level of stability expected of us and one of our major achievements is the manner in which intergovernmental relations have been conducted”

The Budget Adjustment for the 2007/2008 financial year was discussed during the Council sitting and achievements of Council were again recognized, in particular being awarded a 2007 National Vuna Award for Service Delivery.

The local media representatives of 016 News and Thetha FM, under the direction of  the Sedibeng Communications Department, attended a post-Council media session. They had the opportunity to participate in a media conference, conducted by Thetha FM,  with the Executive Mayor of Sedibeng after the formal ceremony.

During this briefing, Executive Mayor Hlongwane explained that Sedibeng is a large region that has various precincts and partners with private sectors and other organisations to increase opportunities to improve the lives of the communities.  One of the significant improvements is the installation of CCTV cameras in areas, contributing to the reduction in the crime rate. This project was assisted by the Community Police Forum.
