Join Sedibeng in Commemorating Human Rights Month – March 2008

March is nationally recognized as Human Rights Month. It is month in which South Africans honour and memorialize the sacrifices made by all who fought for democracy and commemorates the victims and survivors of the Sharpeville Massacre. It is also a month in which South Africans celebrate the human rights that were officially signed in Sharpeville by former President Nelson Mandela on 10 December 1996.

The Gauteng Provincial Government, in partnership with the Sedibeng District and Emfuleni Local Municipalities, will commemorate Human Rights Month with a month long programme. The programme includes a variety of activities as well as the commemoration of the Sharpeville Massacre, which took place on 21 March 1960. The theme for this year’s events is “Human Rights for a Better Life for All”

The Human Rights Festival kicks off on Saturday, 1 March 2008, and the launch promises to be a spectacular affair. The MEC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Barbara Creecy, the Executive Mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality, Mlungisi Hlongwane and the Executive Mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Dikeledi Tsotetsi will officially launch Human Rights Month in Sedibeng and a carnival through Seeiso Street in Sharpeville will highlight the diversity of the month long programme.

The events for Human Rights Month include a Human Rights Fair, the Human Rights Fun Run, Puisano Roving Jazz Programme, a cultural programme and the Sedibeng Choral Festival, amongst others.
