Introducing our Mayor

Jonathan Mlungisi Hlongwane was born on the 28 th of January 1964 in White City Jabavu in Soweto in Johannesburg. He schooled in Soweto, and matriculated at Lobone Senior Secondary School in 1982. Whilst at school, he earned an income by hawking vegetables, sweets, ornaments, and trinkets to the local community, and at this very early stage already he began to sharpen his business skills and acumen.

He is married with three (3) children to Greta, who is a Local Government Councillor at the Sedibeng District Council. They both are residents at Three Rivers East in Vereeniging.

Mlungisi has the fortunate privilege, whilst with the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions to visit very many parts of rural and urban South Africa, Africa, and the Western world. The knowledge he has gleaned from these travels have served him well in his involvement with communities, development experts, business persons, and politicians.

In 1985, Mlungisi qualified as a technician with the Department of Post & Telecommunications. He has served as the Secretary General of the Communications Workers Union, a Congress Of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) affiliate. As the Secretary General he was elected into the COSATU National Executive.

Furthermore, Mlungisi was popularly elected in 1995 in the first democratic Local Government elections in the Vaal. Subsequently, the Vaal Metropolitan Council elected him Chairperson of their Executive Committee, a position he held from 1995 till 1997. During this period Mlungisi was elected as the Chair of the Vaal African National Congress (ANC), as well as being a member of the Gauteng Provincial Executive committee of the ANC.
