Women of Sedibeng Celebrate Women's Day

This was part of the August Women’s Month programme of the District and its Local Municipalities.

The resounding message from all the speakers for the day revolved around the empowerment and upliftment of women throughout the District and across the country. The enthusiastic 1000 strong guests present listen to a range of issues affecting women in South Africa. They were encouraged to break the silence around abuse in particular. An appeal was made to the organs of justice to ensure that women were allowed to speak freely and to do so with protection and free of intimidation.

An appeal was made for women to empower themselves economically and to form coorperatives as vehicles for Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment. It was not good enough to occupy the ‘bottom rung of the economic ladder’ but instead they were encouraged to strive for excellence through training programmes that are available. An interesting call was the one for women to stay vigilant about the education of children and not to abdicate their responsibility to teachers.
