Sedibeng Youth Summit
[25.06.08] The Sedibeng District Municipality held a Youth Summit on the 25 June 2008 at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT). The Summit formed part of the Youth Month programme.
The Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mlungisi Hlongwane welcomed all youth representatives from various sectors including the student’s fraternity, youth organizations, the religious community and young workers to the Summit to dissect the Sedibeng District Municipality’s Youth Development Policy Framework.
The Policy Framework, which will champion the cause of youth development within our District, will also advise government on the challenges faced by the youth at ground level and propose policy interventions. The framework is indicative of district commitment and the crucial role that it has to play in the determination of the overall political direction that the District must take.

The Executive Mayor said that the District conducted extensive research in order to achieve relevance, objectiveness and effectiveness of the document. Important topics such as education, skills development, job creation, human rights, HIV & Aids and the promotion and preservation of our cultural heritage are very close to the people`s hearts in the Sedibeng region.

He believes that the youth in this region can be able to effectively influence National Youth Development Policy formulation processes and it must be read and consulted widely. This has the potential of broadening its worldview regarding to the youth policy of the Sedibeng region.
Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mlungisi Hlongwane concluded his speech by saying that parents fought for the youth’s right to vote in the country of their birth. He urged each and every one to exercise that right in a responsible manner.

He also said that the Sedibeng District Municipality is engaged in talks with the Independent Electoral Commission and other stakeholders to conduct Youth Mock Elections in the Region. This initiative should be seen as one of the vehicles to promote and encourage youth to participate in the elections. Therefore all youth in the region must put their ears to the ground for details and support this initiative. He coded "All youth to the polls" as the theme of Youth Month in the region.
