Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Champions have received certificates after completing Health and Safety Representative training aimed at strengthening workplace health and safety practices.
The training outlined the role of Health and Safety Representatives, including conducting workplace inspections, identifying hazards, investigating incidents and complaints, making recommendations, and participating in Health and Safety Committee meetings. Inspections were framed as a process of listening to workers and supervisors, identifying hazards and their causes, monitoring controls, and recommending corrective action.
Participants were also introduced to core OSH principles — hazard identification, mitigation and control — as well as risk assessment based on severity, probability and level of exposure.
Training on OSH is a continuous process, not a once-off exercise, to ensure representatives keep abreast of developments and remain reminded of the provisions of the Act in this regard.
The programme reinforced that workplace safety is a shared responsibility. While Representatives report findings to the Health and Safety Committee, employees are expected to take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others, follow procedures, and report unsafe conditions or incidents.
With their certification, the OSH Champions are now equipped to promote safety awareness, identify workplace risks, and support corrective measures across the workplace.
