Arbor Day Programme

Sedibeng District Municipality partnered with the Department of Environmental Affairs and Forestry and Emfuleni Local Municipality in hosting an Arbor Day event on the 11th of October 2019 in Evaton North, ward 19, Multi-Purpose Hall.

This year’s campaign was held under the theme “Forests and Sustainable Cities.” The community of Evaton North was graced with the presence of the Speaker of Sedibeng District Municipality, Cllr Andiswa Maswai. “Trees contribute to the environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. Trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe” she said.

The focus was not only for the planting of trees but also a cleaning campaign so that the community in Evaton can live in a clean, greener and healthy environment. The community members also participated and played a role in planting the trees and cleaning their area.

MMC Tholo from Emfuleni Local Municipality together with the Sedibeng Speaker of Council handed out new big green dustbins to the community in ward 19, so that there will be less littering on the ground.

Various government departments and non, such as Home Affairs, SASSA, Department of Social Development Emfuleni, Department of Health, NYDA  and Old Mutual were amongst stakeholders that rendered services through engagements.

The event was indeed a success and the community of Evaton was also satisfied knowing that their area was well taken care of. As the Municipality, we are hoping that Evaton will continue to be clean and will stay green.
