At the final Council sitting of the year held at the Vereeniging City Hall on Wednesday 03.12.08, Cllr Mahole Mofokeng was elected as the Executive Mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality. The Council sitting commenced with the resignations of Cllr Khulu Mbongo and Cllr Katso, both of whom resigned to move into the administration of the Municipality. The vacancy created by Mbongo was immediately filled by Mahole Mofokeng as a representative of the African National Congress. The ANC then moved Mofokeng as the nomination for the vacant position of Executive Mayor. With no further nominations, Council unanimously elected Mofokeng as Executive Mayor. Mofokeng made the move in the opposite direction to Mbongo and Kantso, moving from the Administration as Executive Director for Corporate Services, into the Council and
subsequently as Executive Mayor. Mofokeng is the current Chairperson of the ANC Sedibeng Region. The ANC welcomed the new Executive Mayor while the DA and the PAC also expressed their best wishes to the newly elected Executive Mayor.
